Ever Catch a Blue Mahi? We did in September.
September 16, 2025What an incredible day on the water with the clients! This October trip with Good Hit Sport Fishing turned into one of those unforgettable days.
We started out with a bizarre but beautiful sight: a swarm of calico crabs drifting past the boat. My clients were scooping them out of the water left and right and tossing them into the live well—we had a crab bonanza on our hands!
Then, things got spooky. We started hearing this strange sound—a loud sloshing and churning that sounded like it was surrounding us, getting closer by the second. We saw heavy splashing all around and, at first, I figured it was a school of tarpon working offshore.
As the commotion moved into casting range, the reality of what was going on hit us like a tidal wave: It wasn’t tarpon; it was a massive school of Permit!
In a flash, we knew what had to be done. We quickly scooped out a handful of those calico crabs we’d just caught and tossed them into the frothing water. The instant those crabs hit the surface, we were hooked up!
The first fish was an absolute powerhouse—a 25lb Permit. It put up a grueling, 20-minute battle that left my client breathless. Once we brought that beautiful fish boatside, it was a quick tag-and-release. But the action wasn’t over. We immediately got another Permit on the line and brought that one in, too, for another thrilling catch-and-release.
It was an unbelievable and exciting few minutes of fishing, and a truly epic sight to see those massive Permit feeding on the surface in a frenzy. That’s a day I won’t soon forget!
