10′ Hammerhead Sharks are Biting off Fort Lauderdale
June 27, 2024July Wrap Up Report: Fort Lauderdale’s Biggest Fish
July 30, 2024Mahi Mahi (Dolphin) and Kingfish are in season! We’re catching Dolphin offshore and Kingfish near the reefs. Trolling has been very successful, especially for Mahi Mahi. Once we locate a school, we switch to light tackle and cast live bait to entice them. The Mahi Mahi we’re seeing range from 5-10 pounds, with some even bigger catches mixed in.
Ballyhoo is our go-to bait for trolling Mahi Mahi, while live pilchards are our preferred bait for summer Kingfish fishing.
Speaking of big catches, the larger sharks have been hanging around the shipwrecks! We recently battled a giant hammerhead for a full hour on heavy tackle after it took a Kingfish bait.
It’s a fantastic time to be fishing in South Florida!
Captain Mike’s Report from July 3rd:
On our July 3rd trip, we specifically targeted Mahi Mahi schools and were lucky enough to find four! These were some of the best-looking Mahi Mahi we’ve seen all year. Overall, the fishing has been excellent – the fish are definitely here!
Tips for finding Mahi Mahi: We look for birds, floating debris, and weed lines, all of which can indicate the presence of these vibrant fish.
